I love putting my chef skills to the test. What will I bake to win? Perhaps I'll try something new like a vegan pumpkin pie cookie. Quick recipe off the top of my head: grind up some walnuts and dates, add baked pumpkin to the mix, throw in some cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, & ground cloves, a pinch of salt, and what the heck...some chocolate chips. Bake at 350 until golden. Voila!
It's always more fun to create and test recipes together. Without cooking with youth, I would never know the joys of scrambled pancakes or minty pickles.

Our program offers adults the chance to experience what it takes to farm and explore a career in organic agriculture through hands-on training on a 1 acre diversified farm. As an apprentice at the Youth Farm you will gain many valuable growing skills necessary for cultivating a wide variety of vegetables and flowers appropriate to our region. Through this intensive 20-hr per week commitment, you will gain the invaluable experience of nurturing crops and soil day to day and gain a sense for the physical and mental energy required to run a small farming operation that produces high quality vegetables, beautiful flowers, and a rich and harmonious community space. As in a rural farm apprenticeship, we view time spent doing hands-on farm work as the most important component of becoming skilled in organic agriculture. In order to farm, you have to farm!

BK Farmyards is very excited to offer our 2013 Chicken Apprenticeships. We look forward to working and learning with you, and the hours of fun we will have together and with the hens. The BK Farmyards Chicken Apprenticeship is designed to teach the basics of raising hens in the city and direct marketing eggs.

The 2012 Apprenticeship will run for 3 months starting July 18th, and can be extended for additional months. The apprenticeship will meet weekly on Thursdays at 5:30, and apprentices will schedule their own independent hours with the chickens. Apprentices will spend about 4 hours per week in the Imani Garden (Dean Street & Schenectady Avenue) working with the hens, helping with the CSA and taking field trips. The Apprenticeship includes hands on learning with the current chicken keepers, independent work with the hens, independent readings and explorations, and field trips.

This is an unpaid apprenticeship; however we will sometimes be able to offer eggs to take home. We will ask each apprentice for a small deposit to keep their place in the program (or make an alternate arrangement if the deposit presents a difficulty).
SYMPHONY OF THE SOIL is a feature length film that explores the complexity and mystery of soil. Filmed on four continents and sharing the voices of some of the world’s most highly esteemed soil scientists, farmers, and activists, the film portrays soil as a protagonist of our planetary story. In a skillful mix of art and science, soil is revealed to be a living organism, the foundation of life on earth. Most people are soil-blind and “treat soil like dirt.” With the knowledge and wisdom revealed in this film, we can come to respect, even revere, this miraculous substance. The film inspires the understanding that treating the soil right can help solve some of our most pressing environmental problems, from climate change, to dead zones, to feeding an ever increasing world population.
People are really excited about growing their own food. When
we practice urban farming or gardening, we celebrate ancient wisdom of nourishing
our bodies, our communities, and our land. There’s a reason there’s been a huge increase in home and community gardens, it makes us feel great!

Even with our shortage of green spaces here in NYC,

There are tons of easy mistakes for novices to make AFTER the ground thaws and the growing season starts. There are also big mistakes you
can make BEFORE you ever plant a seed. Like anything in life, a good plan will
get you about 80% of the way to your goal. If you want a bountiful garden this
summer, do your research now, and enjoy the garden ride knowing you’ve reduced
your risks of total crop failure and emotional let down. Gardening is high stakes experimentation: it takes 4 months to go from seed to tomato, so you want to make sure you start out right.

There is so much free information available online for new
gardeners or growers that it’s incredibly easy to get lost in the information and
not know when something is important until you have lost your entire crop of
tomatoes. I want everyone who spends their time gardening to reap the full
benefits of the garden experience, so I’m sharing my list of most common
mistakes that people make TODAY and until the ground thaws.

‘It’s
winter, I’ll think about it later’ –
If you’re plan is to go to the garden store in April and ask a bunch of
questions, plant what you can find, and hopefully eat some herbs and
veggies, your success or failure will depend on your innate knowledge of
biological processes and the store’s ability to guess your needs. You
might even feel wildly successful because you were able to eat some
homegrown deliciousness, but what you won’t know is how much MORE
efficient and bountiful your harvest could have been if you had done some
research and created a plan. It’s February, and farmers have already
created their crop plans, ordered their seeds, and probably planted their
leeks and onions. You still have lots of time to plan if you start now.
(NOTE: dates for your growing
zone may vary.)

‘There’s
nothing magical about soil’ – If you
intend on eating your vegetables, you should be deeply interested in what
your plants are ‘eating’. All growing mediums are not created equally. Have
you gotten a soil test to know what you’ll be consuming? If you don’t have
access to soil, how do you feel about the nutrient differences between
container gardening, rooftop farming (which is essentially a giant
container), hydroponics, aquaponics, and aeroponics? Sure, you might be
conserving water with hydroponics, but is your nutrient source
sustainable? Does that answer factor into your decision making process or
not? At some point, the nutrients that your plants take up are coming from
the earth, so this is an opportunity to define what you want your
relationship to be with our planet. If you want to dive into the magic of
soil, I recommend the book ‘Teaming with Microbes’ as a wonderful underground
journey.

‘I’ll
figure out what to do in the garden when I get there’ – Spending time pulling weeds because you don’t
know what else you’re supposed to be doing in the garden is not the best
use of your energy (unless you love pulling weeds). Defining your
gardening style for your favorite crops allows you to move through your
garden with confidence and ease. And let’s be real. The sunniest, most
gorgeous days are the days that you want to go to the beach or hiking, and
those are the same days that are going to kill all your hard work in the
garden. If you have a full and busy life and it is not your intention to
spend all your free time tending your garden, then you need to know
exactly how to spend time nurturing your plants in a way that suits your
lifestyle. And about those weeds…if you plan well.

‘I’ll
harvest whenever I’m hungry’ – Edibles
will surprise you with their abundance if you pay attention to their
manicuring needs. Pre-season is the time to plan if you are planting cut
and come again crops and what your pruning technique will be for your
precious fruiting vines. You’ll end up with a harvest schedule that will
maximize your yield, help you plan special meals, and make tons of space
for more plants.

‘I
forgot what I did last year’ – If you
plan to grow food each year, get a journal. Science experiments require
observation if you ever want to replicate or change the outcome. Don’t
rely on your memory. You will inevitably forget if you planted that
broccoli July 31st or August 7th, and that one week
could be the difference between eating broccoli in the fall and just
getting some broccoli leaves (which are still delicious, but
anti-climatic).

Your relationship to your garden starts before you plant any
seeds or seedlings. Address these 5 issues and you will be well on your way to
a bountiful harvest. Make your commitment now and you will already be enjoying
time spent in your garden this season.

The conference, in its 5th year, is an amazing opportunity for new and beginning farmers to learn from each other and spend time together.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We're reaching out to our supporters to ask that they support Buy Nothing Day this coming Black Friday (which has also been rebranded as Occupy Xmas). While supporting local volunteer organizations is not on the list of approved activities by Adbusters or Wikipedia, we believe it is an amazing way to give thanks while not adhering to the Buy Nothing edict. In fact, it's the opposite of buying...it's giving! Why be passive when you can be active. We are rebranding the Friday after Thanksgiving as Give Something!

Please consider supporting new youth farmer internships and youth employment opportunities at the Youth Farm. Go to the Green Guerillas site to donate what you can. Tell your families about our programs and invite them to donate what they can. (Make sure you designate your gift to the HSPS Youth Farm.) Our youth farmers want to grow! You can check out some of our Youth Programs on the blog. Or a video from last year's Youth Farmer Employment Program.

Whenever there is a natural disaster like Hurricane Sandy, it is so apparent how much we have to be grateful for. While so many people are back to business as usual, there are still thousands whose lives have been upturned. While we only lost a small amount of produce & equipment from hurricane damage, we rely on this income to fund our youth programs on site. We believe that sustainable farming practices like ours are critical in climate discussions and local food security.

If you would like other ideas for how to give this Buy Nothing/Give Something day to more directly support Hurricane Sandy efforts, we recommend donating to Brooklyn Community Foundation Recovery Fund for Emergency Grants to community organizations helping with Sandy relief. Community groups on the ground are so effective with their flexibility to get aid where it's needed most.

Give Thanks on Thursday and don't forget to Give Something this Friday to someone who needs it.
